Shyamnagar Mulajor Kali temple in West Bengal

Shyamnagar kali temple

Shyamnagar Kali temple is also named Mulajore Kali temple. Behind the establishment of this temple, there's a beautiful story, where Goddess became daughter and devotee became her father. It is said that the temple was established in the year 1809 by Gopimohan Thakur, brother of Prince Dwarkanath Tagore. Once Zamindar Gopimohan aspired to have Maa Kali as his daughter. He started sadhana to pleased Ma Kali so she can fulfill his desire. As per zamindar Gopimohan's wish, Devi ma born as a beloved daughter Bramhamayee in his house.
When Bramhamayee became eight, Gopimohan forgot about the revelation that Devi make to him before she born. As a diligent father, he fixed her marriage. On the day of marriage, Bramhamayee expressed her wish to take bath in River Ganga. Those days the females were not allowed to take bath in the open space. Therefore the servants carried her in a palanquin to Kolkata Ahiritola Ghat, to fulfill her wish. But after a long silence, the servants feel that there is no sound coming from the palanquin they enquired. They discovered no trace of Bramhamayee inside. As if she vanishes in thin air. She was the beloved child of the Zamindar, everyone started to search for her. When Gopimohan heard the news that her body was never found there his world fall apart. Gopimohan was dismayed by the death of his beloved daughter Bhamhamayee. Later in his dream, Devi ma appeared and queried, why he wanted to send his daughter out of his house by fixing her marriage? as he aspired to have her as his daughter. He apologized to Devi Ma for his stupidity. Then Devi ma said that she will be found on the banks of the Ganges near Mulajore and asked Gopimohan to built a temple there.
As per Devi ma’s direction, Gopimohan sent his men to search for Bramhamayee’s dead body on the banks of the Ganges near Mulajore. As Ma Devi told, they found Brahmamayee’s dead body and a black stoned idol of Ma Dakshina kali and Mahadev idol lying under the feet was half-buried in the bank of the Ganges.
Then Gopimohan came to the place where Mulajor Kalibari is there today and at the beginning of the nineteenth century, on the full moon day of Baishakhi in 1809, Gopimohan Tagore established the Brahmamoyi Temple.
The Brahmamayi temple is the Navaratna temple, such a temple is not very common in West Bengal. There are twelve Shiva temples lined up on the south and left sides of the temple. Shiva temples were completed by Gopinamohan's son Prasanna Kumar.
There are two lion statues made of white stones on two pillars near the steps in the temple. Above that, there are two more pillars on which are two statues of Vishnu. It is believed that these two idols which were found while digging somewhere in Rajshahi, are even older than the Brahmamayi idols.
